The first images and details of the Subaru Advanced Tourer Concept have been revealed ahead of the car’s international debut at the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show on November 30.
The Advanced Tourer Concept is an evolution of Subaru’s Hybrid Tourer Concept that was unveiled at the Tokyo show two years ago. Subaru has refined the design of its Tourer concept, potentially suggesting the Japanese manufacturer is preparing it for production.
Earlier this year, Fuji Heavy Industries – the manufacturer of Subaru vehicles – confirmed it would have a hybrid model on the market within the next five years. It has given no confirmation of exactly what type of car the production hybrid will be.
The Advanced Tourer Concept is 4 580 mm long, 1 840 mm wide and 1 430 mm tall, making it 210 mm shorter, 40 mm wider and 185 mm lower than the Subaru Outback. It is powered by a 1.6-litre horizontally opposed direct-injection turbocharged Boxer engine, which works in tandem with an electric motor and a lithium-ion battery. Subaru says the powertrain will offer drastically improved efficiency and will include a full EV mode for zero-emissions driving. The Advanced Tourer Concept incorporates Subaru’s Lineartronic continuously variable transmission (CVT) and symmetrical all-wheel drive system.
Inside, the concept features a large monitor on the steering wheel that gives the driver access to maps, television and the internet. The concept also scores Subaru’s EyeSight driver assist safety system and a glass panel roof.
The Subaru Advanced Tourer Concept will debut alongside the Subaru BRZ sports coupe at the Tokyo Motor Show at the end of this month.
