The all-new 2012 Porsche Boxster (981) has been officially revealed. It will go on sale mid-year in international markets, and is expected to go on sale in South Africa in the second half of 2012.
This is the third generation of the Boxster since the birth of the series in 1996. The latest version of the two-seater model introduces an all-new lightweight body, upgraded flat-six engines with direct petrol injection, a completely revised chassis and in true Porsche fashion, evolutionary styling.
Major changes to the new-generation model include a complete exterior design overhaul with a sharper front end compared with the current model, and a wider rear incorporating a similar lip spoiler design as seen on the 2012 Porsche 911.
The new model comes in two flat-six engine variants, including a base model with a new 2.7-litre unit producing 198 kW (up 10 kW from the current 2.9-litre), and a revised 3.4-litre flat-six for the Boxster S, producing 235 kW (up 7 kW). Both variants will be available with a six-speed manual, or Porsche’s PDK double-clutch seven-speed auto.
Acceleration for the new models is slightly quicker than before. The base model sprints from 0 – 100 km/h in 5.7 seconds (down from 5.8), while the Boxster S does the same in 5.0 seconds (down from 5.2). Fuel economy has been improved for the new model, with the Boxster offering an average fuel consumption rating of 7.7 L/100km and the Boxster S only slightly more thirsty at 8.0 L/100km.
The longer wheelbase and wider tracks promise to improve space for passengers while Porsche has also added a new fully automatic hood, which now dispenses with a compartment lid for the convertible top when stowed away.
Other changes for the new model include a new all-aluminium construction, replacing the current steel layout. Although official figures are yet to be released, overall weight for the new model will almost certainly be lower than the current model (1355kg). The revised chassis is also expected to contribute to the weight savings.
Inside, the most prominent changes take place on the centre console, which boasts a large screen and an elevated lower section and features a similar feel to that of the latest 911 and the Panamera.
