While the first local journalists have just returned from overseas with a test drive of the all new Volvo V40 premium hatchback under their belts, some images of the upcoming Volvo XC40 have arrived, undisguised, on the Internet. Volvos newest crossover is slated to make its world debut in September at the 2012 Paris Motor Show.
What you’re looking at is the rather good looking body of a V40 with a redesigned front bumper, suitably embellished off-road skirting, new headlamp treatments and, presumably, all-wheel drive on demand for top end versions when they need to be taken off-road.
Powering the XC40 will be the same turbocharged 1.6- and 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engines as found in the V40 T3 and T4 modes, with power ranging between 110 kW and 137 kW. A more potent 177 kW T5 variant could also join the line-up at a later date. Diesel engines are offered too, with power ranging from 85 kW to 130 kW. Details of specifications for South Africa are likely a long way from being finalised, but we’re looking forward to both the new V40 and XC40, which are good looking and should offer a solid alternative to the countless German models that flood our roads.
