Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid Announced

Volkswagen has unveiled a hybrid version of its popular Jetta sedan at the 2012 L.A. Auto Show, which VW say is up to 20 percent more fuel efficient than a similarly sized compact-sedan.

The Jetta Hybrid is powered by a 1.4-litre TSI turbocharged petrol engine with 110 kW and 250 Nm in combination with a 20 kW electric motor. A decoupling clutch, integrated between the two power sources, disengages the internal combustion engine when necessary, while a 7-speed dual-clutch DSG transmission transfers power to the front wheels.

The Jetta Hybrid is able to launch from 0 – 100 km/h in under 9 seconds and can be driven exclusively on electric power at up to 70 km/h for 2 kilometers. The lithium-ion battery weighs 35.8 kgs and is located behind the rear seats where it takes up minimal space. The battery is recharged via the typical method of kinetic energy, that being braking and decelerating. During electric operation and at speeds of up to 84 km/h, the petrol engine can be turned off, but also decoupled from the drivetrain, which minimises frictional losses, thus improving fuel efficiency. The Jetta Hybrid’s combined fuel economy is rated at 5.2 L/100km.

Other elements unique to the Jetta Hybrid are low rolling resistance tyres, a unique radiator grille and LED tail-lights. Depending on the specification level, the Jetta Hybrid can also be had with a leather steering wheel, ‘Titan black’ or ‘EcoTech’ seat upholstery, dual-zone automatic climate control, as well as an 8-speaker sound system with Bluetooth and iPod connectivity.
