GWM Steed 5 makes owning a new bakkie easy

Now that GWM is pooling their resources to entrench a renowned range of single and double cab bakkies, the brand is feeling justifiably confident about its chances of making serious inroads into one of the largest volume segments of new cars. And as the economy tumbles with uncertainty and new car finance deals are rejected daily, the timing of this enriched line-up brings a streak of optimism to the lives of hard working South Africans.

The realigned Steed line-up is the result of close cooperation between GWM South Africa and Great Wall Motors in China,” says Hannes Oosthuizen, former brand Manager of GWM SA. “South Africa loves bakkies, and GWM is already well-established in that regard, but with this new line-up, we will offer a model range that not only stretches wider than most, but one which is made up of variants that have been carefully specified and positioned to comply with South African consumer trends and requirements,” he explains. “From the fitment of a rear differential lock as standard on some models, to the development of a new, more affordable turbodiesel engine for the local market, the revised line-up shows that GWM South Africa listens to its customers.”

Currently the Steed 5 range branches off into two models; the regular Steed 5 and the Steed 5E, each one offering a different value mix clearly defined for contrasting applications. In their own unique ways they prove that GWM listens to its customers’ needs and is constantly taking that feedback to improve its products.

GWM South Africa has been instrumental in the development of the Steed 5, which is available as a single or double cab. Requests for a more powerful turbo diesel, specifically for this market, initiated the new 2.2-litre WGT engine to get approval from China. The 2.2-litre WGT engine delivers 78kW and 225Nm with a new Bosch control system replacing the Delphi unit on the previous VGT engine. “The engine has been extensively tested in South Africa and we have no doubts that the market will appreciate its blend of economy and driveability,” says Oosthuizen.

Just as important is the new entry level turbodiesel Steed 5 Double-Cab which is equipped with items such as dual airbags, ABS/EBD, alloy wheels, air-conditioning, radio/CD system, a leather-wrapped, multi-function steering wheel and even a rear differential lock.

The Steed 5E

Realising the diverse roles that its bakkies will be subjected to, the GWM Steed 5E holds up the more upmarket end of the range and is offered only as a double cab. So comprehensive are the changes that GWM refers to the Steed 5E as a whole new product and chief amongst its talents is reduced road noise and vibration which translates into a more relaxed cabin environment.

Aesthetically modern through new bumpers replete with foglights is a widened front airdam and striking chrome elements and darkened headlights. More subtle is the deletion of the roof mounted aerial and indicators housed neatly in the side mirrors.

Interior changes come with the aim of rivalling the pricier competition and even the lower SX model packs climate control, USB support, ABS and dual airbags. The Steed 5E XScape expands on this through leather interior, a Bluetooth-enabled touchscreen, rear diff lock and tyre pressure monitors.
