For the last couple of years the motoring world has been silently buzzing at word of a Koenigsegg sedan. And now comes confirmation from the company’s CEO and founder, Christian von Koenigsegg, that a sedan is in the works.
The confirmation was made to Top Gear when the magazine recently interviewed von Koenigsegg. However, as enticing as the prospect of a Koenigsegg sedan may be, it will be some time before it’ll be production-ready.
“It’s a project we’ve been working on for quite some time,” von Koenigsegg was quoted as saying. “I’d be surprised if that’s the next thing we release – because we’re getting such a good response for our traditional type of supercars – but it’s a car I’d love to do.”
Koenigsegg and Bugatti are in similar positions with regards to building sedans. Though their pedigree and heritage do not mention or even make provision for a sedan, demands from clientele are prompting them to consider going down the sedan route. Sadly, though, the unstable market and economy are forcing Koenigsegg and Bugatti to prolong the wait for their respective sedans.
Whether or not Koenigsegg would ever build a high-performance SUV, von Koenigsegg is not keen on exploring this avenue. Though his company may benefit from selling an SUV, von Koenigsegg believes that a performance-orientated SUV defeats the purpose of having an SUV: to go off-road.
Koenigsegg is responsible for some of the fastest cars of the new millennium and it would be interesting to see where the new sedan fits in – perhaps the only sedan capable of matching the Tesla Model S for straightline performance.
