The Honda Type R had a good run – about two years at the top of Nurburgring’s FWD records. Now Renault’s Trophy-R is back to reclaim a record it last held in 2014. And it does so with a lot fewer wings than the Civic.

Pity the 220kW 1.8-litre hatch, which shaves 130kgs over its regular Megane R.S brethren, won’t be sold in big numbers. In that sense the Trophy-R reminds us of the extreme Megane R26.R, which never came to SA.
