The Best M car gets better: M2 Black Shadow

BMW has revealed a special-edition version of the M2 to celebrate the success of the compact sports car, which managed to outsell the M3, M4, M5, M6, X5M and X6M to become the manufacturers best-selling M-car in 2017, with 12,000 units sold.

Guests at the Geneva Motor Show were treated to the debut of the BMW M2 Edition Black Shadow. The Edition Black Shadow uses the same turbocharged 3.0-litre straight-six engine from the standard M2, except there is a plethora of cosmetic modifications that differentiate the special-edition from its regular sibling.

Firstly, each model will only be available in Sapphire Black. This colour complements the new matte-black 19-inch alloy wheels and the gloss black kidney grille surrounds. Carbon door mirrors bring the look together in the front of the car, while the rear is treated to the new M2 LCI taillights, a carbon diffuser and slick black chrome tailpipes.

Performance figures should remain unchanged from the standard BMW M2, with the engine producing 272kW of power and 465Nm of torque, which can be increased to 500Nm of torque through the overboost function. Power is sent to the rear wheels through either a six-speed manual or a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox, allowing the Edition Black Shadow to accelerate from 0-100m/h in 4.3-seconds in the automatic.

Sources have revealed that South Africa is confirmed to receive a total of 20 BMW M2 Edition Black Shadow’s, with each expected to carry a slightly heavier price tag than the normal M2 Coupe when it goes on sale in the second quarter of 2018.

This success comes at a great time for the M-Division, especially since it’s planning further growth with the introduction of the BMW M8 next year, which will be powered by a 4.4-litre turbocharged V8. However, as the saying goes, a new door opens after one is closed, and this is true for the F80 M3 which will be put out of production in the coming months.
