Audi SA Announces New S5 Cabriolet And TT RS

Posted on 14 January 2010 by Scott Hayes

Audi has started 2010 with a bang and launched two top of the range performance variants for their A5 Cabriolet and TT model ranges.

The Audi S5 Cabriolet quattro S tronic brings a sporting element to the A5 cabriolet range, which until now has made do with the 195 kW 3.2 FSI as the most powerful engine available. The new S5 Cabrio differs from it’s Coupe sibling in that it uses the same engine found in the S4, namely a supercharged 3,0-litre V6, and not the 4,2-litre V8 as one might expect. The supercharged V6 produces 245 kW and 440 N.m of torque and, coupled with a 7-speed S tronic gearbox, is enough to launch the S5 Cabriolet from zero to 100 km/h in an athletic 5.6 seconds, with a limited top speed of 250 km/h. Harnessing the power is Audi’s S sports suspension, high-performance brake system – with the S5 logo on the calipers – as well as a set of 18-inch tyres as standard.

The long awaited Audi TT RS has finally arrived on our shores and is set to tear up the tarmac with quattro permanent four-wheel drive and a powerful 2,5-litre 5-cylinder engine. With 250 kW and 450 N.m of torque, the range topping TT has a zero to 100 km/h sprint time of just 4.6 seconds with a limited top speed of 250 km/h. Thanks in part to the Audi Space Frame (ASF) technology, the TT RS weighs just 1 450 kg’s and has an impressive power-to-weight ratio. To match its striking body kit, the TT RS features 18-inch wheels fitted with 245/40 size rubber, ventilated brake discs – 370 mm in the front and 310 mm at the rear – as well as sports suspension to lower the car by 10 mm. The TT RS comes equipped with a number of standard features, including a driver information system relaying boost pressure, oil temp and a lap timer; park distance control in the rear; a Bose sound system; satellite navigation with TT RS welcome screen; and TT RS flat bottomed multi function sports steering wheel.

The new models are similarly priced with the S5 Cabriolet costing R693 500 and the new TT RS slightly cheaper at R693 000.

2010 Boxster Spyder – Lightest Porsche In Production

Posted on 07 November 2009 by Scott Hayes

www.SACarFan.co.za - Porsche Boxster Spyder

Porsche has released the first images and details about the 2010 Boxster Spyder.

Described as the “…purist form of the Porsche sports car – light, powerful, consistently open, and very efficient”, the Spyder is powered by a 3,4-litre six-cylinder engine that produces 238 kW. Backed up by the optional PDK (Porsche-Doppelkupplungsgetriebe) transmission, the Spyder accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 4.8 seconds before topping out at 267 km/h – with the roof down. If that isn’t impressive enough, the roadster consumes just 9.3 L/100km in the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC).

To further maximise the Spyder’s sporting prowess, Porsche put the car on a diet – it weighs just 1 275 kg, which makes it the lightest model in the Porsche lineup – lowered the center of gravity, and added an all-new sports suspension.

In terms of styling, the car features a unique soft top, extra-low side windows, and two rear deck lid bulges, which are meant to resemble the ones used on the Carrera GT. Other design touches include modified front and rear bumpers, 10-spoke alloy wheels, and revised air intakes. Inside, the roadster boasts an exclusive interior with sport seats, ‘Boxster Spyder’ branded scuff plates, and a body-color centre console.

Set to debut at the Los Angeles Motor Show, the Boxster Spyder will go on sale in February 2010 for EUR53 100 (EUR63 404 in Germany, after a 19 percent VAT and country-specific features are applied). Pricing and availability for the South African market has not been confirmed.

Press Release

Purist Mid-Engined Roadster is the Lightest Porsche

Light, Efficient, Open: Boxster Spyder Making World Debut in Los Angeles

Stuttgart. Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, is introducing a new top version of the Porsche Boxster, a light mid-engined roadster making its world debut at the Los Angeles Motor Show in December.

Weighing just 1,275 kg or 2,811 lb, the Boxster Spyder is the lightest model throughout the entire range of Porsche cars. Clearly recognisable right from the start, this new mid-engined roadster represents the true, purist form of the Porsche sports car – light, powerful, consistently open, and very efficient.

This is precisely the formula already applied in creating Porsche’s most successful road-going sports and racing cars, ranging from the legendary 550 Spyder all the way to the RS Spyder so successful in motorsport today.

The Boxster Spyder now continues this clear-cut philosophy with full homologation for the road, thus reflecting a common wish expressed by Porsche customers. The new model is entering the market in February 2010 as the third version in the Boxster range, joining the Boxster and Boxster S.

The new member of the Boxster family stands out clearly at very first sight from the other versions of Porsche’s mid-engined roadster. Quite simply because the Boxster Spyder has been developed first and foremost for driving in the open air, the low-slung, light soft top extending far to the rear serving exclusively to protect the driver and passenger from bright sunshine, wind and weather. When closed, the soft top, together with the extra-low side windows and the two striking bulges on the single-piece rear lid, boasts a stretched and sleek silhouette reminiscent of the Carrera GT.

Significantly less weight than the Boxster S, a lower centre of gravity and an all-new sports suspension give the Boxster Spyder the right kind of driving dynamics clearly reflecting the unique look of the car.

The Boxster Spyder features a 3.4-litre six-cylinder with Direct Fuel Injection upfront of the rear axle. Maximum output is 320 bhp, 10 bhp more than in the Boxster S.

Equipped with PDK Porsche-Doppelkupplungsgetriebe and the Sports Chrono Package, the new Spyder, using Launch Control, accelerates from a standstill to 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds. Again with optional PDK, fuel consumption is a mere 9.3 litres on 100 kilometres (equal to 30.4 mpg imp) in the NEDC New European Driving Cycle. Top speed, in turn, is 267 km/h or 166 mph – with the roof open.

In terms of its fundamental concept, the entire Boxster family is the successor to the legendary 550 Spyder built back in 1953, both models sharing the same mid-engine roadster concept, low weight, back-to-the-roots lifestyle, and supreme agility combined with equally outstanding driving pleasure.

The 550 Spyder was the first sports car from Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen developed specifically for racing but also homologated for the road. In the years following its production, this unique Spyder weighing only 550 kg or 1,213 lb, scored numerous victories on race circuits and in the road races so popular at the time.

The 550 Spyder was followed by other extremely successful Porsche Spyders such as the 718 RS 60 in 1960.

In 2004 and 2008 Porsche dedicated a limited edition of special Boxsters bearing the additional name Spyder to these legendary racing cars. By contrast, the new Boxster Spyder is a regular, specially developed and upgraded production model with far-reaching modifications versus the Boxster and Boxster S.

Market introduction of the new Porsche Boxster Spyder will start worldwide in February 2010. The base price in the Euro countries is 53,100 Euro. Including 19 per cent VAT and national specifications, the market price of the new Porsche Boxster Spyder is 63,404 Euro.

2009 Knysna Hillclimb A Winning Formula

Posted on 05 November 2009 by Scott Hayes

www.SACarFan.co.za - 2009 Knysna Hillclimb

This past weekend saw close to 50 competitors taking part in the inaugural Knysna Hillclimb. Unlike traditional motorsport events, a hillclimb pits man and machine against the stopwatch. The event took place on a challenging 1.85 km climb up to the acclaimed Simola Estate and Golf Course, and set on a picturesque hill overlooking the renowned Knysna Estuary and Heads.

A variety of vehicles battled it out over the two day event, from road cars such as VW Golf’s, a pair of Fiat Uno Turbo’s, C55 and CLS 63 AMG Merc’s to thoroughbred race cars such as the trio of V8 Ford Mustang’s from the Owen Ashley V8 Masters Series, to an Oval Track racer and even 125 and 250cc karts.

Practice and qualifying runs took place on the Saturday, with drivers quickly getting to terms with the steep and twisty road. Suspension, tyre pressures and camber were all tweaked in search of the fastest time, but in an uphill battle against gravity there is no substitute for horsepower. By the end of the day it was clear who the top contenders would be in Sunday’s final, with the fastest qualifying run of the day, 43.272 seconds, being set by Anton Cronje in his wide-body Subaru Impreza WRX, followed by the V8 powered Ford Mustang of Sarel van der Merwe.

www.SACarFan.co.za - 2009 Knysna HillclimbSunday’s action took place in cooler, over-cast conditions with dark clouds gathering over head. Three more qualifying runs took place before the final title chase. 21 Drivers made it through the elimination rounds to do battle for top honours. But the battle for outright victory was fought between motorsport legend Sarel van der Merwe in an immaculately turned out V8 Masters Ford Mustang and a highly modified Subaru WRX superbly driven by Anton Cronje. The two were separated by fractions of a second throughout the qualifying runs, with Cronje marginally ahead throughout Saturday and Sunday qualifying.

In the final, however, ‘Supervan’ displayed his immense talent and experience to produce his best run, pipping Cronje by just over half a second to claim the first Knysna King of the Hill title. He covered the course in 43.0 sec, reaching a top speed of over 230 km/h.

Cronje’s Subaru was disadvantaged with a cracked exhaust manifold, but despite losing the overall fastest time up the hill to Supervan, he still won his class.

Third fastest overall went to Capetonian Fanie Theron in the Owen Ashley built V8 Master Mustang, with Cronje’s class rival Thouca Mechanicos fourth in his Mercedes C55 AMG.

Proving that dynamite does indeed come in small packages, John Amm was a crowd favourite aboard the fifth placed PVP Rotax 250cc Superkart – not bad for a projectile that could almost fit in the boot of the winning car! Former rally champion Enzo Kuun rounded off the top six in his Audi R8 V8, which attracted attention wherever it was parked. Both won their respective classes.

The 2009 Knysna hillclimb proved to be a roaring success. Organisers expected to host around 2 000 motorsport enthusiasts over the weekend, but in fact that number turned out to be over 6 000, and from where we were standing it was easy to see why.

www.SACarFan.co.za - 2009 Knysna HillclimbThe Simola Estate is a beautiful setting in itself, but coupled with the backdrop of the Knysna Lagoon, the Knysna Heads and surrounding mountains, the event was picturesque to say the least. The 1.85 km course offered excellent and safe viewing of the cars, as all spectators were located on the inside of the corners and sitting above the road. Despite the popularity of the event, traffic to and from the venue was never an issue and various food and drink was available along the length of the course to keep spectators satisfied.

The organisers have told us to expect bigger and better things next year and we will definitely return to support the event, take in the action and who knows, maybe even have a go at racing up the hill ourselves.

Special thanks must go to Amanda and Ryk Cloete from Point Lodge for hosting us for the weekend. Their comfy B&B is situated right on the Knysna lagoon and is less than 5 minutes from Simola and Knysna’s Restaurants and Pubs.

Wolf Racing Gives Focus RS Even More Power

Posted on 30 October 2009 by Scott Hayes

www.SACarFan.co.za - Wolf Racing Ford Focus RS 360

Wolf Racing announced the launch of a power pack for the new Ford Focus RS. German Touring Car Masters (DTM) diehards should recognise the tuner’s name; it appeared on the dominating Cosworth RS 500 over two decades ago and caused some commotion in Group N rallying.

www.SACarFan.co.za - Wolf Racing Ford Focus RS 360Known as the Wolf RS 360, the Wolf tuned Focus RS is powered by the standard engine that has been modified to output 265 kW and 559 N.m of torque at 3 100 rpm. This represents a 18.5% increase in power and 27% increase torque over the standard model.

The Wolf RS 360 also includes a multi-disc differential lock and a new coilover suspension with lowering springs, which ‘drop’ the car by 30 mm. The car runs on 20-inch wheels and the can be fitted with various design enhancements, including a selecting of decals and aluminum pedals. The Wolf Ford Focus RS will be launched at the Essen Motor Show that starts on November 28th and ends on December 6th, 2009.

Press Release

Already in the serial version, the Ford Focus RS outplays the competitors in its class. 305 hp (224 kW) and a maximum torque of 440 Newton meters are neither achieved by the VW Golf GTI nor the Opel Astra OPC. And on top of this, Wolf Racing now adds the refinement.

With an optimised engine and turbo charger management, Wolf Racing lifts the Focus RS into an own league. The refined Wolf RS 360 renders 360 hp (265 kW). The engineers increased the maximum torque by 27 percent to impressive 559 Newton meters, which the Wolf RS 360 already provides at 3,100 rpm. The Ford specialist located in Neuenstein (Germany) offers this performance enhancement for only 1299 Euros including VAT.

As Wolf Racing has its roots in motor sports, the engineers did not only focus on a stronger engine. Only in connection with the multi-disc differential lock for 2500 Euros the serial car turns into a race car with official approval and homologation for road service. As soon as the torque rises, the differential lock interacts. Therefore, it is exactly the combination with the Wolf performance enhancement which unfolds the potential, as more torque is available at an earlier stage. When accelerating and also when braking, the differential lock with an increasing effect provides a higher traction at the beginning and the end of the curve. This guarantees a better curve speed and an optimal handling. The coilover suspension for 1299 Euros provides best road holding conditions. Thereby, the lowering can be individually adjusted to the requirements of the road and the preference of the driver. Alternatively the lowering springs for 219 Euros lower the Wolf RS 360 by 30 millimeters and render an even more dynamic character. The lower center of gravity facilitates the handling, so that the gained performance can be transmitted to the road through the front wheels.

The 9×20 inch wheels in multi-part look also enhance the dynamic appearance and can be obtained already from 399 Euros. In the version glossy black with stainless steel well, the contrast is emphasized very clearly and underlines the sporty character of the Wolf RS 360. Wolf Racing also offers the light alloy wheel in the dimensions 8.5×19 and 8.5×18 inches in finishes ranging from charcoal matt polished over silver varnished with stainless steel well up to matt black. With its selected design elements, the Wolf RS 360 distinguishes itself from the serial Focus RS.Decorative strips in silver, charcoal, blue, red, orange, yellow, black or white for 98 Euros and Wolf stickers from three Euros as well as aluminum pedals including foot rests for 193 Euros are indicators for the stronger Ford.

With the Wolf RS 360, Wolf Racing once again confirms its competence when it comes to refining Ford automobiles. With the overall package containing the performance enhancement, differential lock and suspension, the engineers were able to transfer racing technology to the road. The Wolf RS 360 is exhibited at the Essen Motor Show from November 28th until December 6th 2009 in hall 10 at stand 304. Further information about all Wolf Racing products is available at the web site www.wolf-racing.de

Revised 2010 Lexus IS F Now Even Quicker

Posted on 30 September 2009 by Scott Hayes

The biggest change to the 2010 Lexus IS F, is the addition of a new, compact mechanical Torsen LSD (Limited Slip Differential) that supersedes the previous Brake LSD function unit.

www.SACarFan.co.za - 2010 Lexus IS F

The change has seen the IS F gain a two second improvement in lap times around Japan’s Fuji Speedway and joins other convenience and design feature upgrades in face-lifting the model. The Torsen LSD redistributes the torque that is lost when a wheel loses traction during cornering, without limiting engine output. New differential oil has also seen the unit perform more smoothly as well as making it quieter.

IS F upgrades also include a revised satellite navigation unit with improved route guidance, functionality and map view. The 14-speaker Mark Levinson audio system has been upgraded too and now features a new USB input for iPods along with new software to allow selection of tracks via the vehicle’s touch screen navigation unit.

Interior revisions see the inclusion of folding rear head restraints, F logo on the ultra-thin card key, and a new steering wheel and centre cluster design. The new steering wheel has added colour trim in the lower section of the rim and new “overcast” stitching pattern to provide a neater finish to the leather wrapped steering wheel. The centre cluster has improved audio switches, as well as a new facia around the navigation system and air conditioning unit.

In addition, Lexus has redesigned the moonroof controls with seesaw-type switches in lieu of a dial-type switch, for greater ease of use.

Supercars And Classic Cars To ‘Ascend’ On Knysna

Posted on 07 September 2009 by Scott Hayes

2009 Knysna Hillclimb

When we reported on the Knysna Motor Show earlier this year, we thought the next time we’d be hearing news from the little town would be for their motor show in 2010. Well thankfully we were wrong, because from 30 October to 1 November, Knysna will be hosting their first motoring hill climb event, The Knysna Hillclimb.

The Knysna Hillclimb was due to be a one-day event, however, the local classic car club wanted to combine the event with a car show. Consequently the event is now being run over two days and will include not only modern cars in the hill climb challenge, but classic cars will be in the running too.

2009 Knysna HillclimbThe competition will take place on a 1.85 km section of road winding up to the acclaimed Simola Estate and Golf Course. Entries include some exotic machinery such as a 1939 Lagonda Le Mans racer, Ford GT40′s, Chevron B19, Lotus 23, Jaguar E-Type, Lotus 7′s, and a variety of Ferraris and Porsches.

The hill climb weekend will officially kick off on Friday 30 October with a public viewing of the cars at the Premier Hotel Knysna / The Moorings Resort for the afternoon.

The competition itself will be held on Saturday and Sunday, with practice and qualifying taking place each morning, before the finals on Sunday afternoon. Track activity will be from 10am – 4pm on Saturday and 10am – 2:45pm on Sunday.

Entires are limited to 75 cars, which will be grouped in four classes competing for the top honours as follows.

  • Classic cars (1600cc; 1600 – 2000cc; 2000cc +)
  • Road cars (4, 6 and 8+ cylinders)
  • Race cars (Up to 1600cc, 1601 – 2000 cc, 2001 – 4000cc, 4001cc +)
  • Forced-induction cars (Up to 1600cc, 1601 – 2000cc, 2001cc +)

The event has been sanctioned by Motorsport South Africa (MSA), the Knysna Municipality and Traffic Department and, in the interest of safety, marshals and medical services will be on duty throughout. Spectators will have easy access to the event allowing them to come and go throughout the day. Designated spectator areas along the course should provide a great view of the action from the embankments lining the road. Entry to the hill climb is R20 per adult and R10 for children, with all profits going to local charities.

We don’t need a second invitation to take a long weekend! If you’d like to become involved or find out more information, you should send an email to Ian – ian[at]gopp[dot]biz.

By the way, if you’ve read this far and aren’t sure what a hill climb is – we admire your level of focus – but to give you an idea, take a look at this video from the infamous Pikes Peak Internationl Hill Climb.

UPDATE
The organisers have just sent us a video preview of the course. Watch in-car footage from an Audi S5 coupe and a Lotus 7 – which sounds like it’s got a Suzuki Hayabusa motor under the hood.

Saleen 435S Based On The Ford Mustang

Posted on 27 July 2009 by Scott Hayes

www.SACarFan.co.za - Saleen 435S

Saleen, the American tuning house known for pumping out high performance Ford’s, has just unveiled the new Saleen 435S. Based on the new 2010 Ford Mustang, it will be the first vehicle launched under the aftermarket automaker’s new ownership.

The Saleen 435S rides 38 millimeter lower to the ground than a stock Mustang GT and is powered by the same 4,6-litre, 3 valve, SOHC V8 engine, with the addition of a Saleen Series VI twin-screw supercharger and two-stage intercooler, to bring the intake charge down to a manageable temperature. The blower brings the car’s total power output to 319 kW and 576 N.m of torque.

The exterior of the Saleen benefits from an understated blacked out trim panel between the taillights with “Saleen” written in raised lettering, a mesh cover for the fog lights in the grill and graphic elements placed low on each side of the vehicle. Saleen is offering the 435S with a set of 18-inch 5 spoke alloy wheels with 19 and 20-inch rims available as an option. Finishing off the Saleen Mustang transformation are the ’435S’ letters on each side of the hood of the car’s power dome.

Press Release

Saleen Performance Vehicles today unveiled its first 2010 product, the Saleen 435S, based on the new 2010 Ford Mustang. The introduction took place as part of the Special Vehicle Team Owners Association’s annual “Mustang Week” event. The 435S is the first vehicle launched under Saleen’s new ownership, following the purchase of Saleen Inc. earlier this year.

This car continues the Saleen tradition of offering limited-edition, high-performance vehicles for enthusiasts who are looking for an exhilarating driving experience, with refined drivability for real-world road conditions.

The 435S is designed to provide affordable, high-value performance.

“In these difficult economic times we wanted our first vehicle to deliver a lot for an affordable price,” said Mike Shields, CEO of Saleen Performance Vehicles. “It was created much more for ‘go’ than for show. We focused on power and handling, and it’s a great platform to build on if a customer wants to take it farther later on.”

Heart of the car’s performance is its 4.6-liter, 3-valve SOHC V8 engine, complete with a Saleen Series VI twin-screw supercharger and two-stage intercooler. This engine produces a vigorous 435 horsepower and 425 lb.-ft. of torque. It’s mated to a 5-speed manual transmission, and has a 3.73:1 rear axle ratio with limited-slip differential.

The car rides 1.5 inches lower than a Mustang GT, thanks to its Saleen Racecraft performance suspension. The system is designed to reduce body roll, provide nimble, precise handling and improve traction, while retaining the compliant ride of a good daily driver. The suspension package includes springs, a stiffer front stabilizer bar, and nitrogen-pressurized shock absorbers tuned exclusively for the 435S.

The vented brake rotors, front and rear, are slotted and cross-drilled for improved feel and stopping performance. Larger, 14-inch slotted front rotors with 4-piston calipers are available as an option.

The 435S has the Saleen-signature long, low, sleek looks and aggressive stance that have distinguished the company’s previous cars. Traditional Saleen styling cues include an understated trim panel between the taillights with “Saleen” in raised lettering, mesh covers over the fog lights in the grille, and the Saleen name and chevrons as graphic elements placed low on each side. An optional Aero Package includes a lightweight chin splitter and rear spoiler for improved aerodynamics.

Other exterior highlights include unique, 18-inch, 5-spoke alloy wheels (19- and 20-inch wheels are available), and “435S” lettered on each side of the hood’s power dome.

Inside, the modifications are designed to enhance the driving experience and to express the car’s character. These include a new, short-throw shifter for quick, precise gear-changing performance, and new, driver-oriented gauges. These uniquely styled gauges retain Mustang’s MyColor™ capabilities that allow the owner to select from more than 125 custom colors for the instrument cluster. The car’s identity is highlighted by a Saleen logo embroidered on the headrests.

“All in all, we believe the 435S is the right car at the right time,” said Shields. “It’s a terrific performance value that we’re proud to offer. And this is just the first of many great Saleen vehicles we’ll be launching in the future.”
