Images of the Shelby Super Cars (SSC) Ultimate Aero II have emerged as the battle to be the world’s fastest supercar continues.
The previous SSC Ultimate Aero offered a very different experience to the Bugatti Veyron, with minimal driving aids or electronic interference. It took the Veyron’s crown until Bugatti hit back with the 429 km/h Super Sport. Now the fight looks set to move into round three.
Developed by Shelby Supercars and designed by Jason Castriota, the Aero II has been designed and built with the to take down the Bugatti. Aiming to the give the Veyron Super Sport a bloody nose, the R6.6 million, twin-turbocharged 6.8-litre V8 Aero II gets to 100 km/h in 2.8 seconds before reaching a claimed top speed of 440 km/h.
That V8 develops a staggering 993 kW (compared to the Veyron’s 870 kW) and, with its lightweight carbon fibre construction, it weighs in at just 1 179 kg. They Veyron is just shy of 2 000 kg.
Its extra power and more slender frame gives the Aero II a power-to-weight ratio almost double the Veyron’s. The Ultimate’s wheels follow the same low-weight mantra as the rest of the car, being the world’s first single-cast carbon fibre wheels, which tip the scales at just under 6 kg each.

Bugatti has released the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport – a ‘sports’ version of its already record-breaking Veyron.
Taking the once world’s fastest car and making it even ’sportier’ is nuts. But taking it to its top speed to prove its potential is even more nuts. Henri Raphanel, Bugatti’s official test driver did though, to achieve a new landspeed record for a production car in front of Guinness Book of Records officials. He and the car managed an average speed of 431 km/h.
Bugatti’s chief engineer said in a recent press release,”We took it that we would reach an average value of 425 km/h, but the conditions today were perfect and allowed even more.”
The new Super Sport is only available in two-tone black and orange and is also known as the ‘World Record Edition’, appropriately. Power from the 8,0-litre W16 engine has been increased from 746 kW (1 001 HP) to 895 kW (1 200 HP). Torque has also been boosted somewhat, from 1 250 N.m to 1 500 N.m. Exclusive? Bugatti says production is limited to just five, which have all since been sold already.
The production version will be fitted with an electronic speed limiter though, which holds it to a sluggish 415 km/h. Bugatti says this is due to the production tyres not being engineered to withstand higher speeds. Fair enough.
