Saab Fans Fight To Save Museum Collection

Saab fans are fighting to preserve the largest collection of the Swedish brand’s production and concept cars after the bankrupt company’s receivers put the contents of the Saab Museum up for auction.

Approximately 120 vehicles housed at the museum at Saab’s headquarters in Trollhattan – including the first car the company ever made, the Ursaab/Project 92 – are set to go under the hammer as the receivers seek to recover as much money from the fallen company in the shortest space of time.

Saab enthusiast website Saabs United has shortlisted 11 of the most unique and valuable cars in the museum, and has appealed to fans, clubs and companies around the world to do what they can to keep the collection together.

Saabs United’s top 11 cars to save:

  • 1946/1947 Ursaab
  • 1959 Saab 93 Monstret
  • 1970 Saab 96 V4 BAJA
  • 1956 Saab Sonett I
  • 1978 Saab 99 Turbo Rally
  • 1978 Saab 99 Turbo
  • 1985 Saab 900 EV-1
  • 1987 Saab 9000 T16 “Talladega” no.2
  • 1960 Saab Formula Junior
  • 2001 Saab 9X Concept
  • 2007 Saab Aero X Concept

“I could see all other cars sold and dispersed around the world,” wrote the senior Saabs United blogger. “They are not as significant as the 11 on the list or can easily be replaced with other existing cars or could be replicated. Could we advise prospective buyer NOT to put bids on those 11 cars, letting the future Museum organisation buy each car for let’s say a token $10,000.”

Saab’s parent company Swedish Automobile announced on December 19 that Saab Automobile AB, Saab Automobile Tools AB and Saab Powertrain AB had filed for bankruptcy, all but ending the company’s existence as an automotive manufacturer.
