The Volkswagen Up! city car has beaten some exotic favourites to be named the 2012 World Car of the Year.
To win the World Car of the Year title, a car has to excel in terms of merit, value, safety, environmental impact, significance, and emotional appeal.
Despite an overall length of just 3.54 m, the panel judged the Up!’s cabin comfortable for four adults. Euro NCAP has also awarded the Up! an ‘Advanced Award’ for its city emergency braking system.
In the case of the Volkswagen up! judges were mainly impressed by the car’s combination of small footprint (3.54 m), big interior space and innovative City Emergency Braking system, which has seen the Up! earn an ‘Advanced Award’ from Euro NCAP.
The WCOTY trophy is not the first award for the Up!, which has already collected the ‘iF design award in Gold’, ‘2011 Goldene Lenkrad’ (Golden Steering Wheel) in Germany.
