Next Golf and A3 to receive VAG 1.5 TSI engine
Soon you won’t be able to buy VW’s 1.4-litre TSI and 1.6-litre TDI engines. In their place will be VAG’s new 1.5 TSI engine (in petrol and diesel) which will begin to feature prominently across the Golf and Octavia models before branching out into bigger models – perhaps the new VW Tiguan.
One can understand why Volkswagen is streamlining the engine range; new emissions regulations for 2020 and attention very much on VW’s compliance has advanced the development on a new cleaner engine for 2017. The facelifted Golf 7 is front of queue to be the first car featuring the new 1.5 TSI powerplant while Audi’s A3 could be equipped with the diesel variant.
Much of this speedy turnaround can be credited to Volkswagen’s versatile MQB platform, “The engines are all new but their dimensions are very similar to what we currently use, so they can slot into existing cars or facelifts.” says a source closely involved with the project.
