Hybrids feasible with Subaru’s modular platform

Frankly we’re a bit worried about Subaru. The WRX was brilliant, the STi wasn’t fast or comfortable and cars like the Legacy are thirsty and can no longer hide their age. Sales volumes reflect this with dipping numbers that are putting dealerships under pressure.

A glimmer of belief does exist, one that will bring greater safety and better handling to the next range of models, excluding the BRZ.  Subaru’s modular platform (Subaru Global Platform) will make it possible to adapt the underpinnings to myriad drivetrains without risking a large R&D re-tool. Subaru Global Platform will make provision for future hybrid powertrains and allow several different bodystyles to roll off the same production line, simultaneously reducing costs and ramping up production.

What Subaru has done slightly differently is divide the platform’s USP’s into two key areas; dynamic and safety, but it’s unclear at this stage what that entails and what advantages customers would get from it.

President of Subaru’s parent company, Fuji Heavy Industries, Yasuyuki Yoshinaga said: “The Subaru Global Platform lifts Subaru’s automotive technology to new heights, and marks the next step in the evolution of enjoyment and peace of mind. We are confident that it will allow us to produce vehicles that live up to our proud traditions and meet the high expectations customers have of Subaru.”
