BMW X1 Li bridges gap with ingenious proportions

The Beijing Motor Show threw up its usual abundance of stretched models tailored specifically for the domestic market but BMW’s X1 Li caught our attention for its clever packaging in a popular segment.

This is not the first time BMW has upsized its modular platform. Although unfamiliar to the South African market BMW does offer a Gran Tourer of the 2 Series and the X1 Li builds upon those attribute but wrapped in more orthodox SUV styling with ground clearance as the major drawcard.

Nearly 80mm longer than the standard X1, the floorplan is only slightly within the borders of the X3. Besides occupying more road, you can recognize the BMW X1 Li by those larger rear doors which open up to a cabin that has really focused on maximizing rear legroom. With that design purpose in mind, boot space remains at 505 litres.

Pushing this roomier X1 along is the same drivetrain configuration as its regular brethren. Assuming you want to use the car for its intended purpose the 3-cylinder 1.5-litre turbo charged engine is as small as you’d want to go but the 2.0-litre diesel engine is going to be the preferred choice. The S denotes front-wheel drive while all-wheel drive models are badged with a X.

Production of the BMW X1 will take place at BMW’s Chinese partner Billiance at a joint venture factory in Tiexi.
