First details on BMW’s quad-turbo B57 engine
BMW’s latest high-powered diesel is up to four turbo chargers and will make its grand debut in the BMW 750d XDrive.
An evolution of the triple-turbo N57 engine released in 2012, the new engine, codenamed B57, retains the 3.0-litre straight six configuration but with sharper low-end response and gains of 5kW and 20Nm. Mind bogglingly, 450Nm is available at 1000 rpm and the full 758Nm shove is on hand by 2000 rpm. BMW says the engine is around 11 per cent more efficient.
Compared to the N57’s uneven layout which utilised two low pressure turbos and one high pressure turbo, the B57 spreads torque across two small turbo chargers are paired with two high pressure blowers. The fuel injection system was overhauled to pressurise fuel at 36 000psi.
BMW is already claiming that the 750d XDrive will smother 100k/h in 4.7 seconds so imagine what it will be capable of in a slightly lighter frame…
