BMW reconsiders the 8-Series to build 911 rival
BMW is rearranging its model line-up with the aim of producing (and then positioning) a car that will put them in a fierce battle against the Porsche 911, Mercedes GT and Jaguar F Type. Until now BMW has largely ignored this segment but the recent spate of new competitors has renewed their interest.
The first move in this complex plan is to resurrect the 8-Series badge which will evolve into an S Class rival as the firm’s designated luxury gran tourer. BMW has already got this underway through a recent trademark application for the names 825 through to 860 and M850. At this stage the M850 will stands a good chance of getting the 4.4-litre V8 twin turbo but a V12 is also under consideration.
The car’s construction could closely resemble the carbon core design used first on the 7 Series. Carbon core is credited with reducing the Seven’s weight by around 200 kilograms while being responsible for exemplary crash test ratings.
A convertible version of the 8-Series would be a logical match for the recently launch S Class convertible.
The return of the 8-Series will partly fill the role played the by 6-Series and that knock-on effect will ultimately allow BMW to create a 2-seater contender that’s smaller and lighter with less emphasis on being a gadgetry GT. The new 6-Series could hinge off the upcoming sports car platform co-developed with Toyota but rejigged from its initial Z4/Supra plans.
