Complete Volvo S90 range headed to SA

Set to challenge BMW’s 7 series and Mercedes-Benz’s S-Class, Volvo’s S90 flagship sedan will be making its way to South African shores before the year ends with Volvo’s latest efficient powertrains and semi-autonomous driving.

According to Greg Maruszewski, Managing Director at Volvo SA, the new S90 is a continuation of Volvo’s renaissance in South Africa.

For the 2016 model year, the new Volvo S90 will be launched initially with D5 and T6 AWD derivatives with Momentum or Inscription trim. Good news is that the S90’s complete range will be made available which comprises the D4 FWD, T5 FWD and R-Design variants in 2017 with the T8 Twin Engine to follow at a later stage. No mention of that 3-cylinder engine Volvo was touting a few months ago…

The comprehensive range, which echoes that of the XC90, brings efficient and powerful Drive-E engines to the fore and culminating in the range-topping T8 Twin Engine that produces 300kW and 640Nm and able to propel the Volvo S90 to 100km/h from standstill in 5.2 seconds. The updated D5 twin-turbo diesel engine, featuring new PowerPulse technology, is included in the range.

As part of its vision 2020 in terms of safety, Volvo’s safety arsenal is fitted as standard, with the inclusion of the latest Large Animal Detection and Run-Off-Road mitigation completing the existing comprehensive IntelliSafe technology.

Fitted as standard to all S90 models, is Volvo’s Pilot Assist semi-autonomous technology which is now able to run up to 130km/h with clear lane markings and without the need for a lead car.

Indicative pricing will be finalised closer to launch but we hear rumours that the comprehensive range might sit in the region of mid-600k and 900k. SA Car Fan will bring you more from the local debut.
