Isuzu could help develop the next Mazda BT-50
The pick-up market is growing at a rather staggering rate; Fiat, Renault, Peugeot, Citroen and Mercedes-Benz are all launching, or planning on launching new pick-up models. With the relationship between Ford and Mazda’s no more, the Japanese carmaker has been on the lookout for a new partner in the bakkie segment and appears to have found a match with Isuzu.
Mazda and Isuzu plan on developing a worthy contender by simultaneously replacing the current Mazda BT-50 and Isuzu D-Max models (known in SA as the KB) with an all-new model. Both models have lost market share to Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger which offer improved handling, newer technology and updated interiors.
In attempt to keep up to date with the latest pick-ups, Mazda and Isuzu have announced that they intend to team up and bring the next generation of pick-up trucks that will likely replace the current Mazda BT-50 and Isuzu D-Max models.
The new trucks will be manufactured by Isuzu and sold under licence by Mazda. According to a spokesperson, the new deal between the two firms “reinforces the continuous long-term relationship between Isuzu and Mazda.”
Details on a potential launch date have yet to be announced.
