Mahindra answers demand with auto XUV500
Mahindra introduces auto gearbox for W8 XUV 500 in South Africa. Not available on all-wheel drive model.
The Mahindra XUV 500 is becoming an increasingly popular sight on South African roads thanks to the addition of a six-speed automatic option that has been optimised for fuel efficiency as well as response. The carefully selected ratio ensures midrange tractability whilst maintaining smooth acceleration and economical open road cruising.

The six-speed transmission is mated to the 2,2-litre four-cylinder turbodiesel engine which produces 103KW with a claimed 7.4 litres/100 km for the combined cycle – slightly higher than the manual’s figure of 7.1l/100km.
Mahinda XUV500 auto offers the best of both worlds; attaining the quick responses of a manual transmission with the refinement, convenience and ease of an automatic transmission.
The intelligent transmission adapts to different driving conditions, and is equipped with a ‘creep’ function that easily copes with stop/start driving conditions in urban traffic. A manual override mode still offers enthusiast drivers the option of shifting gears for increased driver involvement as well as control.
“Our New Age XUV500 has been extremely well received since we launched this sophisticated, well-equipped and highly competent SUV locally in October last year,” says Sanjoy Gupta, chief executive officer of Mahindra South Africa. “However, customer feedback indicated that there is a significant demand for an automatic transmission model.”
Although only initially available on the front-wheel W8 derivative, the New Age XUV500 is available through Mahindra’s national dealer network.
