Is the BMW M760Li their quickest ever?

BMW stands by its ethos of sheer driving pleasure and with the M760Li it seems to provide that for drivers and passengers alike. Acceleration to 100 takes just 3.7 seconds thanks to the XDrive system, and given the right tyres, can surge on all the way to 310 km/h if unrestricted!

Now granted our drive in the BMW M760Li was a short 3 lap stint around Aldo Scribante circuit and for the other M cars that were available for sampling, this made sense. For the 760 not so much. But considering the 2.7 million rand price tag I was grateful just to be able to experience the car, and now I shall try to relay to you the facts and my feelings on what is a truly spectacular piece of engineering the M760Li is.

That Engine

The 6.6 litre twin turbo V12 produces 448kW and 800nm. And thanks to the new four wheel drive system, no more lairy tale slides for the BMW flagship. That is left to the hooligans in the other lower series cars (said with a snooty tone). M760 is composed, always. If one could anthropomorphize this car it would be James Bond, in a bow tie at a fancy dinner party.  If things got out of hand an undramatic fist fight would ensue at which point Mr Bond would simply straighten his jacket and continue to regale a lucky lady with tales of adventure.  The acceleration through the 8 speed gearbox is seamless and if you’re aware of the weight, and practice patience in braking and cornering, the 7 series is elegantly rapid.  The car understeers ever so slightly but again, with all that weight, its surprisingly efficient at dispatching vast amounts of road very quickly.

The sound from the V12 is symphonic and the hooligan in me wishes it had a much louder performance exhaust, but that’s not what 760 is about. BMW M760Li is about understated class and sophistication.

All too quickly my time in the 760 came to an end. Another legend is born and for those that can afford to experience this, it will be sheer driving pleasure, wether enjoyed from the front or back seat.
