Volvo XC40 headed for South Africa

This is the new Volvo XC40 and it’s a pretty big deal for the Swedish manufacturer. The XC40 marks Volvo’s entry into the ultra-competitive compact premium SUV segment. It also debuts the first three-cylinder engine to be used in a Volvo.

The 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine will ship standard with a six-speed transmission, which can be specced up to an eight-speed transmission.

“Our new three-cylinder engine is an exciting development for the XC40 and for Volvo Cars in general,” said Alexander Petrofski, senior director cluster 40 at Volvo Cars. “This compact engine design provides the flexibility we need as we introduce more powertrain options for XC40 customers.”

The XC40 line-up will also include a 110kW D3 diesel engine, a 140kW T4 petrol engine, a 185kW T5 petrol engine, a Twin Engine plug-in hybrid model and a fully-electric model to complete the range.

The XC40 will also be available in different trim-levels, namely the Momentum, R-Design and Inscription levels.

Each trim-level allows the driver to choose from 18″, 19″ or 20″ rims, unique skid plates, side window and grill mesh chrome and model-specific car colours. Some of the interior options include an all-new crystal gear knob and the attractive Driftwood interior trim. Customers can also venture into sporty territory with 21″ Black Diamond Cut alloy wheels and integrated dual tailpipes.

“The new Volvo XC40 is a youthful car that suits drivers with a strong sense of individuality,” said Alexander Petrofski. “We want our customers to be able to make a statement their way – subtle or otherwise – and so we want to offer them more choices, both in performance and styling.”

Says Greg Maruszewski, VCSA Managing Director: “The new XC40 is perfectly suited to the South African market. It’s luxurious, capable and compact, and we’re looking forward to introducing the first derivatives in April.”
