New Peugeot 208 revealed with petrol, diesel and electric variants

Peugeot has lifted the covers off the all-new 208 ahead of its debut in Geneva later this year. The 208 will be available in petrol, diesel and fully-electric guise.

The supermini is longer and 30-kilograms lighter than its predecessor, allowing it to achieve a more dynamic stance. It’s design manager, Yann Beurel, describes the look as “futuristic and young”.

The Peugeot 208 will be available at launch in three derivatives. The 1.2-litre petrol engine is available in three flavours – 56kW, 74kW, and 95kW. The 1.5-litre diesel makes 74kW, while the all-electric 208 will produce 101kW of power. Gearbox options include a 5-speed manual on the entry-level petrol model, a 6-speed manual and an 8-speed automatic across the rest of the line-up.

The electric 208 is claimed to achieve a range of up to 340-kilometers on the new WLTP legislative drive cycle thanks to its 50kWh battery, which also boasts a charge time of 80% in 30 minutes.

All variants of the 208 will be front-wheel drive and available in 5-door only. Aside from some subtle colouring on the front and the badges, there will be little to distinguish the electric 208 from its internal combustion engine siblings. According to Peugeot, this is a move made to mitigate alienation toward electric vehicle owners.

The interior of the Peugeot 208 receives an updated version of the i-cockpit, consisting of a small steering wheel placed beneath the instrument cluster. The dashboard wraps around the cabin, with a 7-inch central touch display up front. A larger 10-inch screen is available on higher-spec models.

There’s also a significant amount of driver aids and technology borrowed from Peugeots larger cars. The 208 features a heads-up display made possible through the use of a reflective screen. There is also a smartphone app that will allow drivers to heat or cool the interior of the 208 before they get in.
