Mercedes-AMG S65 Final Edition ends V12 era
It’s certainly a sad moment for petrolheads around the world amid speculation that Mercedes will be killing the glorious V12 engine, currently found in the Mercedes-AMG S65. Official confirmation is yet to be communicated, but the new S65 ‘Final Edition’ seems to provide a strong hint towards the future of the 12-cylinder powerplant.
The Mercedes-AMG S65 Final Edition will be limited to just 130 models across the globe and is expected to be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show over the next few days. The limited-edition model will be available exclusively in a gloss black finish, complemented by copper details around the car, including the wheels as well as the front and rear bumper.
The interior continues the black and copper theme, with copper contrast stitching and a carbon fibre dashboard trim. There’s also a badge nestled within the centre console to remind you that it’s the Final Edition. The 6.0-litre V12 engine under the bonnet is the real centrepiece of the car, with a wholesome 463-kilowatts of power and 1000Nm of torque at the driver’s disposal.
Push the accelerator pedal all the way down and the Mercedes-AMG S65 Final Edition will reach its top speed of 300km/h, all while providing its occupants with the finest luxury, such as the ‘First Class’ rear cabin and its individual seats and a plethora of buttons to control things like lighting, scent and media.
This is a fitting send-off for the AMG V12, which is expected to be replaced by a hybrid petrol engine. Specifically, a hybrid 4.0-litre V8 petrol engine, which introduces a rather exciting possibility for the future of Mercedes’ current V12 models, as well as the G-Class and the GT 4-door super-sedan.
The hybrid set-up was debuted back in 2017 on the GT 4-door concept and boasted a colossal 600kW of power in its most extreme tune. To put that into perspective, it’s almost 140kW more than what the existing V12 could throw out on its best day.
