First Look: 2013 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

2013 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

We caught an undisguised glimpse of the new 2013 Mercedes-Benz E-Class in November, but that was a limited, birds-eye view of the car. Yesterday, however, images were leaked online, which give us our first proper look at the upcoming executive saloon.

While no technical details are available at this stage, we do see both the sedan and estate versions of the new E-Class and we can expect to see coupe and cabriolet versions in due course. The biggest changes are of course the single-unit headlights and revised tail-lights. Not only that, but the front and rear bumpers are noticeably different too, along with the character line that runs over the rear fenders. The new rear-end styling gives the 2013 E-Class the impression of having a more slender tail.

In terms of the engine line-up, we expect the choice of diesel and petrol engines to remain largely unchanged, but Mercedes could introduce their small and efficient M274 petrol engine. The M274 is a 1.6-litre, turbocharged, 4-cylinder unit, which produces 115 kW and 250 Nm of torque. Currently doing duty in the C180 BlueEfficiency, the M274 engine manages an average fuel consumption figure of 5.7 L/100km and CO2 emissions of 136 g/km.

The new E-Class will make its public debut at the Detroit Auto Show in January, but with these first images having been leaked, we wouldn’t be surprised to hear a more official announcement from Mercedes in the very near future.
