New aluminium-based Defender possible for 2019
Production of the Land Rover Defender has only just gone quiet but already rumours have sparked up of a replacement. The new Land Rover Defender could make an appearance in 2019 but it will be a vastly different car compared to the original.
The Sixty eight year old design could be expanded into a “small family”of vehicles priced towards the affordable and selling low-volume numbers. New Defender won’t change much in size while insiders hint that design director Gerry McGovern “now knows what the new Defender will look like”, although the final details are not complete. What we can say with some certainty is that it won’t be influenced by the concept DC100 which didn’t receive a favourable reception – we liked it…
Jaguar Land Rover’s propensity to build everything out of aluminium is almost certain to affect the Defender while other modern updates could include independent suspension to go with the proven low-range systems that have taken this car all over the world.
Other discussions around the new Landy Defender include where it will be manufactured. Although the car’s entire history has been proudly born in the UK, future production could take place in Slovakia but not without a fight from those emotionally connected with the project.
