Early rumours that Evoque Plus will battle X4, GLE

A new idea doesn’t stay one for long. If there’s any veracity to reports that Mercedes wants to copy the Range Rover Evoque convertible (not sure that’s such a good idea, mind) then Range Rover will feel fully entitled to get one back over Mercedes’ GLE with the temporarily named Evoque Plus.

Land Rover vehemently denies any truth about the project but certain UK publications report that Evoque Plus could come to market by the end of 2017.

This new model in the range would tackle the BMW X4 and recently launched Mercedes GLE, using a similar recipe of conventional SUV lower bits designed for all types of terrain but with a sloping coupe roofline for a sleek aerodynamic profile . Those SUV bits will have much in common with Land Rover’s F-Pace (due in South Africa later this year), giving some indication about the car’s dimensions.

Playing off the Evoque’s styling which already lends itself to a more rakish look, the new car has the genes pull off the transformation with less awkwardness than its German counterparts. The interior could do the same; a four seat configuration is tipped to be the norm with five seats optional while Terrain Response will blend harmoniously with multimedia functionality.
