Bold or Boxy for new Mahindra TUV300

Mahindra SA have announced the launch of the TUV300 SUV in South Africa.  The TUV300 is powered by a 1.5-litre turbo-diesel  engine, producing 73.5kW of power and 240Nm of torque. Twin-stage turbocharging has been used to reduce turbo lag while an eco mode allows the TUV300 to achieve a claimed fuel consumption of 5.4L/100 km.  A 5-speed manual gearbox is the only available drivetrain option.

The exterior design is said to be purposeful and indicative of the TUV300’s ”go anywhere” capabilities, while being inspired the design of a battle tank… Well, it’s certainly boxy, if that’s what they’re on about,  but that’s about as far as the similarities go. I can confidently say that you’re not going to strike fear into the heart s of your enemies arriving in your Mahindra TUV300.

That being said, Mahindra do claim that the high strength steel body will allow the TUV300 to tackle any challenge thrown at it – dual wishbones upfront and coil springs all-round should be a surfeit for all surfaces. Roof rails, 15 inch alloy wheels and static cornering lights and ABS are all included as standard.

Inside you’ll find seven seats, a multifunction steering wheel, Bluetooth connectivity, parking sensors and two airbags. Mahindra claim that the ride offers confident handling combined with a smooth pliant ride both on and off road. The dual-ton cabin is uncluttered is less offensive than usual with some practical trim materials but antiquated screen size. So I ask, what happened to the KUV 100’s more modern dashboard layout, why wasn’t it carried over?

The Mahindra TUV300 T8 has recommended retail price of R229 995. Included is a 3 year/ 100 000 km warrant and a 3 year/ 90 000km service plan.
