Fastest Bentley credits exceptional W12 engine
Bentley’s venerable W12 6.0-litre turbo is one of motoring’s current delights and with new impetus steering Bentley South Africa in the right direction, pardon us for being a noticeably more excited by the brand’s latest offerings.
The latest Continental GT Speed has the title of being Bentley’s fastest production model. An accolade based around its 332km/h top speed. Other numbers to chew on include a 0-100km/h time of 3.9 seconds, making the previous 4.2 seconds languid by comparison.
To achieve this power has swelled incrementally to 472kW from 467kW and torque now rests at 840Nm, an improvement of 20Nm. Insignificant gains for a car of its size but an optimised boost control system raises torque delivery throughout the rev range, ensuring the driver of a new Continental Speed immediately feels the muscular powerplant.
In the same family is Bentley’s Continental Speed Black Edition, identifiable by high-gloss black finish to exterior brightwork, including window openings, as well as black 21in wheels and red or black brake calipers.
Bentley’s broad customisation provides the option of a different colour on the front splitter and side skirts while the leather can be specified to suit individual tastes.
Paul Jones, product line director for Continental GT, said: “We have developed the GT Speed Black Edition to meet demand from customers for a model in the Continental line that offers both increased sporting capabilities and instantly recognisable styling cues. The Black Edition has a subtle but purposeful look that is backed up by exceptional performance.”
