Road Test: Mahindra Pik-Up 2.2CRDe Double Cab 4×4 S10

Interior and Exterior

Apart from the front end, the new Pik-Up doesn’t look all that different to its predecessors from the outside. The front grille design has been slightly altered along with the rear cab protector. The interior however, is where the major changes lie.

The overall package has been enhanced with a different colour trim, new technology and panels that fit together. The inside has a solid, yet friendly feel.

What is it like to drive?

The Pik-Up’s 2.2L mHawk engine has been refined to give more grunt while remaining smooth. Mahindra has created an incredibly easy car to drive that will put up with the punishment that comes with being an everyday dual purpose vehicle. Fuel consumption is at a modest claimed 7.9L/100 km, while the engine churns out a punchy 103kW and 320Nm torque allowing a load of up to 1000Kg and 2500Kg (braked) to be towed.

Steering occasionally feels slightly heavy on the road and the auto-stop-start can be a bit finicky at times. Other than that the S10 drives well.  With the addition of a 6th gear S10 cruises effortlessly and has great fuel economy.

What’s new?

The Pik-Up has been packed with features that one usually finds on cars twice the price. Among the standard features are cruise control, remote audio control, climate control, auto wipers and lights. Mahindra’s interior party trick is their 6 inch full touch screen infotainment system which has USB/Aux input, and even navigation. The infotainment system works well, with the only drawback being any amount of glare making it impossible to see the screen.

Safety has been improved with an extra airbag fitted for passenger peace of mind. EBD and ABS as well as two rear Isofix points have now been introduced.

Verdict

The Pik-Up is a rugged yet easy car to drive that has been strategically priced and specced. It incorporates modern tech into a modest shell and is comfortable enough for daily living. It is an underdog that seems to enjoy proving just how worthy it is. Mahindra & Mahindra have successfully created a dual purpose vehicle, rugged enough for 4×4 and towing needs, yet friendly enough for Sunday family trips to the harbour.
