Facelift For The Mercedes-Benz R-Class

Posted on 20 October 2010 by Scott Hayes

The Mercedes-Benz R-Class has been updated and now features a completely redesigned front section, which borrows elements both from Mercedes-Benz saloons and SUV models. In addition to the fresh exterior, the 2010 model year R-Class also boasts a number of revised interior features, such as more space, comfort and luxury appeal.

With the latest Mercedes-Benz R-Class, designers focused on the completely revised front section which, by emphasizing the width and making use of a horizontally structured bonnet, gives the vehicle a more harmonious and dynamic look according to Mercedes. In addition to the bonnet, the vehicle’s wings, radiator grille and surround, headlamps and bumpers with chrome underguard have all been completely redesigned. As an optional extra, a chrome insert with integrated LED daytime driving lights in conjunction with bi-xenon headlamps is available to enhance the look of the R-Class even further.

The side view features modified exterior mirror housings as well as the wheel design. Wheels are available in 10-spoke designs, and in sizes ranging from 18 inches (R300 CDI and R300) and 19 inches (R500). The rear of the car has been given a new bumper covering, modified tail lamps and integrated tailpipe trim, which all contribute to a wider look.

Designed for practicality, a wide variety of options are available when it comes to seat variations. The standard wheelbase models offer five seats, while the long wheelbase has space for seven passengers. Optionally available is the five plus two-seat configuration for the standard wheelbase variant. The R-Class comes with partially power-adjustable seats for driver and front passenger as standard, passengers also have available the luxury of actively ventilated and heated multicontour seats with full power adjustment and memory function.

The R-Class also reveals another benefit in the form of its large luggage compartment: in the standard-wheelbase versions the luggage compartment has space for 1 950 litres, while the long-wheelbase version boasts 2 385 litres. In all five-seat variants there is a separate stowage compartment beneath the load compartment floor, while the optional ‘Easy PAck’ tailgate (standard for R 500), which can operated remotely by means of a switch or key, also makes access to the luggage compartment easier.

The interior makes use of new materials and colour combinations, which includes high-gloss brown burred walnut as standard, whilst the R500 is stylishly adorned with a chrome package. Separate rear air conditioning is available to meet all interior air conditioning requirements and the glove compartment now comes with an Aux-In connection for external audio or entertainment devices. Connection options can also be extended further with an optional Media Interface (UCI).

All models boast numerous safety features as standard. Features include the unique anticipatory occupant protection system PRE-SAFE®, a complete restraint system with eight airbags, crash-active NECK-PRO head restraints, a tyre pressure loss warning system and adaptive brake lights. In addition the R-Class has ‘Airmatic’ air suspension with the Adaptive Damping System (ADS), or Blind Spot Assist, which can make changing lanes significantly safer. The modern ‘Linguatronic’ voice control system makes using the telematics systems even easier and more convenient, while a reversing camera provides for smooth, easy parking or maneuvering in blind spots.

Motivating the luxury saloon, in addition to the petrol-powered models, is a new diesel engine. With a combined fuel consumption figure of 7.6 l/100 km, the V6 diesel engine boasts 140 kW of power and strong torque of 440 Nm. The V6 petrol variant boasts 170 kW of power and 300 Nm of torque. Both the V6 petrol and diesel versions are available in the standard wheelbase only. The R500 V8 petrol engine has a force of 285 kW of power and a torque of 530 Nm and is available in a long wheelbase variant. Engines are mated to Mercedes’ 7G-Tronic automatic transmission with ‘Direct Select’ lever on the steering column and shift paddles on the steering wheel.

Both R300 models are rear-wheel drive as standard, while the R500 uses 4Matic permanent all-wheel drive and has a long-wheelbase.
