The Volvo P1800 starred alongside Roger Moore in the British television show, The Saint, but now a 72 year old retiree from Long Island has made his 1966 Volvo P1800S even more famous. His car has travelled 3.2 million kilometres.
When asked how he could achieve such a thing, Irvin Gordon said, “I dunno… It is just a car I enjoy driving.” Gordon was 25 years old when he purchased the car for around US$4 000. He enjoys taking road trips with the car and the front of the P1800 wears the license plate ‘milnmilr’ for million mile-er and pins of all the most memorable journeys from its 46 years.
After 21 years with his car it hit 1 million miles (1.6 million km) and 15 years later it reached 2 million miles (3.2 million km). Giving him an annual average of 90 000 miles (roughly 140 000 km). The mileage on the car is so high it can no longer be displayed on the odometer, but Gordon can verify it with maintenance records. A Volvo expert and the cars mechanic has also verified that Gordon’s P1800 still has its original engine, although the body has had to be rebuilt twice.
Gordon has held the Guinness World Record for a High Mileage Vehicle since 2002; he was the first person to earn the record. He is now aiming for the 3 million mile mark (4.8 million km) which he hopes to achieve before he is 80 years old.
